Let it be known that being an event designer is not an easy job. There are countless poles out there that list wedding planning as being one of the top, most stressful jobs. Forbes, for example, has our line of work at #5, right under enlisted military personnel, firefighters, airline pilots, and police officers . But today we don't want to talk about that - today we want to talk about why we LOVE what we do, despite the fact that it's possibly not the easiest profession we could have chosen.
The art. "Creativity takes courage." — Henry Matisse
Man oh man, we love a good design. We love designing with our clients, we love putting together mood boards, we love physically making the designs, and our absolute favorite - stepping back at the end of a set up to admire what we have accomplished. We thrive on creativity and would not be satisfied sitting behind a computer all day. Bottom line we are artists and we love our craft!
The flowers. "I must have flowers, always, and always." — Claude Monet.
We are slightly obsessed with flowers. Our Instagram feeds are chock full of flower pictures, we get excited about new varieties, we see them every day and they never bore us... They stop us in our tracks when we're out and about, we grow them at home, we take pictures of them constantly... We smell them in the studio and it makes us smile, we have our favorites, we secretly love them all (even carnations folks)... Flowers are a big part of why all of us got into this as a career. It's hard to explain, but they make us happy.
The clients. "Get closer than ever to your customers. So close that you tell them what they need before they realize it themselves." — Steve Jobs
For our wedding clients, our goal is to literally make their dreams comes true. It is extremely rewarding and emotionally fulfilling to have worked so incredibly hard and then see our client's reaction to the room, or their bouquet, or their mock up, or whatever we have created for them. We go through an emotional journey with couples... literally bringing tears to their eyes or getting great big bear hugs, or even just a heartfelt thank you that you can tell is the real deal. Not many jobs come with bear hugs and tears of joy, and making someone's day feels absolutely amazing!
The energy. "There is no substitute for hard work." — Thomas Edison
Working events keeps us young. We are constantly on our feet and moving on days we are preparing for and installing a wedding, not to mention all the days prepping flowers and getting supplies ready. There are those of us at STEMS who quite literally never sit down to work. And those that do sit on occasion to create proposals, definitely still get our workout on half the time. Lifting things, carrying things up stairs of venues, standing all day making bouquets, going up and down ladders - it's not an idle job, and we love that about it! We also love us a good glass of wine Saturday evening while we rest our tired soles.
At the end of the day, those of us who make it in this industry (which are few and far between, we've broken a lot of interns - no lie) love what we do despite the things that make it hard. It's a rewarding career for those who want more than a 9-5 job just to pay the bills. And luckily we have a strong group of epic individuals making up the heart of the STEMS team who all believe life's too short for boring parties - so party on, we shall.
